A man from Passage West opens a brand new pet store in Ballyvolane after giving up his job as an IKEA courier to make his dream come true.

Aaron Dunlea O’Brien, 21, says he’s been “obsessed with animals ever since I got a lizard for my First Communion,” and after three years delivering flat furniture, he decided to continue his work. passion and open ‘Dob’s Pets and Exotics’.

“Growing up in Passage I had almost thirty pets in the house and I really liked reptiles, there was an entire room dedicated to my pets and I tried to make their habitat as naturalistic and comfortable as possible, ”says Aaron.

“I always knew I wanted to work with animals full time and considered becoming a vet or a zookeeper, but finally realized that what I really wanted to do was give to someone. a that first magical experience of owning and caring for a pet, “he added.

Aaron knew he wanted to open a pet store, but finding the right location was difficult.

“Eventually I found a free unit in Chapelgate Shopping Center in Ballyvolane, and it’s the perfect location for the store, I hope to be open by next Friday,” he said.

There are currently around 40 animals living in Aaron’s own home in Douglas, but he does not yet have the animals that will find their temporary home in the on-site store.

“I spoke to different breeders across the country, and in addition to cat and dog food, accessories and toys, when you come to Dob’s next week you can expect to find fish, parakeets. , spiders and a wide variety of reptiles. ”he said.

After leaving school, Aaron studied animal care and management at St. John’s College for a year, and he says animal care is his top priority.

“The reason I keep so many pets and spend hours caring for them every day is because I love to see them flourish and grow, they all have individual personalities. of animals in my store will be my top priority, and making sure they reach out to owners who are knowledgeable about how to care for them and best practices, ”he said.

Aaron expects next week to be absolutely hectic, but he can’t wait to open his doors and let the first customers in.

“It really is a dream come true for me, but I certainly wouldn’t have been able to make it if I hadn’t had such supportive family and friends, the best part will be introducing a child to their pet for the first time, I can’t wait, ”he said.
