Pet grooming

Don’t miss out on your pet’s grooming sessions. here’s why

We bet you love to be pampered. Who doesn’t? A busy day at the spa or salon with a full body massage or facial can turn even a soaking day into an enjoyable day. It relaxes us and rejuvenates us. Likewise, our pets also need a regular grooming session to maintain their well-being and hygiene. Unlike us, they can’t verbally tell you what they need and what they don’t need, but as pet parents we need to know what is needed. Regular grooming of animals, for example, is absolutely necessary for them. One might think, why would a dog or cat need a bath, disentangling, or massage? The answer is the same: relaxation and rejuvenation, just like us. Let’s see why this is so important and why it shouldn’t be ignored.

Why is breed important?

In longer-haired breeds, dogs tend to be more prone to tick and flea infestations, mats, and fungal infections if left unattended. “Different breeds of dogs and cats have different grooming requirements which, if ignored, can lead to skin and health issues. In the case of furry dog breeds such as Lhasas, Shih Tzus, Maltese, Poodles, Chow-Chows among many others; regular grooming plays a very important role in maintaining their health and overall development, ”says Sharan Sharma, owner of Nutty’s Den, a pet store, salon and spa in Colaba and Parel.

“If their grooming needs aren’t met, their fur starts to tangle, leading to redness and fungal infections. While cats are proficient at self-grooming, Persian cats have long coats. They need help to keep their fur free of knots and rugs. Regular grooming helps avoid those painful mats and skin infections in pet dogs and cats. “

• Protect your pet from rugs

This is especially the case with pet dogs and cats that have longer coats. This is a condition where their fur is densely matted and knotted. It is a painful and detangling condition, even more. This condition can lead to other serious health problems like infections or skin irritation and can mask other health problems or parasites as well. “Detangling is not only a tedious task for a groomer, but it is also a painful process for a pet,” adds Sharma. “Even with some of the best detangling products and tools available, it is still advisable to avoid these situations for their pets by spending a few minutes a day brushing their pets’ fur at home.

• Cats are sensitive to dust mites

Cats, on the other hand, are more exposed to mites. Since they are essentially uncooperative when it comes to sensitive areas like the ears, mouth, or eyes, it becomes all the more important to keep an eye out for these infections. Take them to have their ears cleaned regularly at a veterinarian or pet salon who knows how to treat uncooperative cats.

Frequency of grooming sessions

The next big question – how often should you take them to get groomed? It is not a universal solution. It depends on the breed and size of the dog. “Breeds like Labradors, Beagles, Chihuahuas and Indians are relatively easier to manage and maintain. The same applies to Indie cats. These breeds can be groomed once every fortnight and they will do very well. Regularly cutting nails, brushing teeth and cleaning ears is very important, ”she adds. On the other hand, Sharma explains that breeds like Shih Tzus, Poodles, Yorkies, Lhasas, Maltese, Chow Chows, Golden Retrievers, among other furry breeds, have more grooming needs. high and require frequent trips to a professional groomer. To maintain a healthy coat and skin shine, they should also be given regular oil massage which applies to Persian cats as well.

Timely maintenance of nails and paws

Your pets also need their claws cut. Whether it’s dogs or cats, they tend to constantly lick their paws several times a day, which makes them a breeding ground for the development of infections and bacteria that your pet could ingest. Longer fingernails mean increased risks of stomach and other infections. In addition, it is also impossible for them to hold their feet steady on marble, granite or vitrified floors. “During the lockdown, we encountered many companion dogs whose fingernails had not been cut for months. As a result, their fingernails were either ingrown or became too long and prone to breaking, ”says Sharma.

“You can’t suddenly shorten a dog’s fingernails because there is a blood vessel underneath that grows longer with the fingernail. It can only be shortened over a period of time with regular nail trimming and filing. For the same, she adds that there are special nail clippers as well as nail grinders that do the job even at home just as well. Although you have to be very careful while doing it.

She also recommends paw protection boots, especially when walking animals on hot sidewalks, during monsoons as well as in extremely cold conditions. “These extreme conditions make their paws crack – protective boots help prevent that. Paw Balms and Paw Butters can be used to massage our pets’ paws at night to keep them well hydrated.
