Hundreds of birds and fish died Tuesday evening in the fire of an industrial building housing two pet shops in Nieuw-Vennep.

The fire was discovered at 11:30 p.m. and was quickly declared “very large”, firefighters said.

The building housed a specialty bird shop and another shop that sold pet fish. “It only took 20 minutes for my dream, my life’s work, to disappear in a sea of flames,” the owners of the Pond and Aquarium fish shop said in a Facebook post.

It is not known what caused the fire or how many animals perished there.
