New Wash the Dog pet grooming store opens in Westport

WESTPORT – Wash The Dog – it’s that simple.

It’s also the name and mission of a new dog grooming store that opened in town about six weeks ago. Owner Angela Koza said the business, which offers self-service dog washing and grooming services, has had a busy start.

“People love the idea of taking care of their dogs themselves,” she said. “They are a bit like their children.”

Koza said business started to slow in July, but she hopes it will continue to grow, especially at a time when she says the service is especially needed.

She said there’s been a surge of new pets during the COVID-19 pandemic, which means there’s also a need for grooming stores, like Wash The Dog.

According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, more than 23 million households in the United States have adopted a pet during the pandemic.

wash the dog offers multiple services, according to its website: self-service dog washing, self-service and full-service grooming, nail trimming, and pet sitting.

Self-service dog washing is available without an appointment. Owners can choose from six bedrooms with six different tub sizes. Some tubs have ramps for dogs to climb up, and staff can help if a dog needs to be lifted into a tub.

One of the tubs is very large, shower-like, which Koza says some prefer.

Koza said she shows customers how to use the faucets, and they’re good to go, but if they need help, she can help them.

One of Wash The Dog’s features is the private rooms, which Koza says are safer for dogs because they don’t have to be side-by-side.

Each of the rooms is separated by a door. Two of the bedrooms are fully enclosed, while the other four have half doors, so owners can see into the hallway.

Everything a homeowner needs is self-service, like shampoos, towels, brushes and scrubbers – and even aprons for homeowners.

Wash The Dog is also open to families. Koza said that on several occasions parents have brought their children with them to help bathe their pet.

For the full grooming, the dogs are only there between an hour and an hour and a half. There are no cages at Wash The Dog, which Koza says was very well received.

Koza started out as a mobile groomer and traveled to personal homes and businesses to groom dogs. She left the business about five years ago, although she stayed on to keep pets and walk her dog – but was brought back inside.

She saw self-service stores in the neighborhood and found them intriguing. She always wanted to try a store, so Wash The Dog was born.

Originally, she was looking to open in Wilton where she lives, but it didn’t work out.

“Luckily I ended up in Westport,” Koza said. “A lot more traffic, a lot more needs, more animals, and just a bustling city that I love.”

Koza said the name came to him one day, which works with the DIY feature.

Self-service grooming has benefits, Koza said.

“It’s a cost-effective way to keep your dog clean between full groomings and for dogs that don’t get a full grooming,” she said. “Keeping your dog clean keeps your house clean, and there are so many people with allergies that a cleaner dog is better.”

Koza said his customers were happy with the service, and most said they would return.

“Private rooms, they love it, and I love animals and people,” she said. “I hope people enjoy coming to our store, have a pleasant experience and become loyal customers.”

The shop also sells a few dog toys and treats, as well as leashes and collars.

Wash The Dog’s self-serve is $25 and full-service grooming starts at $80. The store is located at 375 Post Road W. and is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
