Pamplin Media Group – Pet store owner renovates former hairdressing salon

Creatures Pet Shop moves from downtown Madras to a new location on Southwest I Street

If you’ve recently driven south through Madras, you’ve probably noticed the new red niche on I Street.

The bright yellow place that housed the Sunny hair salon for 35 years is getting a makeover and becoming a larger-than-normal niche.

Creatures Pet Shop owner Michal Smith has moved her thriving pet food and supply business from downtown Madras to the location along Main Street. It opened in the new location next to Jefferson County Public Health on March 16.

Smith first opened Creatures Pet Shop next to the Southwest Fifth Street Physiotherapy Clinic in 2017, when she was new to the community.

“It wasn’t something the community had had before, from what we understand,” she said of her small animal supply store. “After three and a half years, the community had supported our business so well, it had grown and grown so much that it was clear we needed parking.”

Parking had become a problem not only for its customers but also for refueling trucks.

“The increase in business really motivated the decision to find a place with parking,” Smith said. “The new location had been for sale for a while and luckily it was still for sale when we started looking.”

HOLLY SCHOLZ / MADRAS PIONEER - Michal Smith's boutique offers pet food, treats and supplies for dogs, cats, fish, birds, small animals and reptiles as well as U-Wash service for dogs. She bought the building and began transforming a decade-old barbershop into a doghouse.

“To go with Sunny’s Hair Salon, it was a bright yellow for many, many years, and now it’s a pretty red color,” Smith said. “We have plans for the future to further develop the exterior to make it more doghouse-like than it currently does.”

In addition to the doghouse theme, two large yellow dog bones serve as Creatures Pet Shop signs. Smith, with the help of his partner, has also made some changes to the interior, but the most notable impact is on the exterior of the building.

Creatures Pet Shop will continue to offer healthy pet food, treats and supplies for dogs, cats, fish, birds, small animals and reptiles.

“What has been very clear from day one is that reptile supplies are essential for people who want to stay in the area and go shopping, so we have Dubia crickets and cockroaches and that sort of thing for the reptiles there, ”Smith said.

It also keeps live fish, birds and sometimes other small animals in stock.

As of the first of the year, however, the pet store no longer offers grooming services. After two and a half years, groomer Desiree Pierce moved on and started her own business, Stinker Tinker Salon.

But, Creatures Pet Shop still offers the U-Wash service. For $ 10 per dog, dog owners have their own space to wash their pets. Smith has all the necessary shampoos, blowers, towels, and tools.

“I’m so happy to be in this new location! Not only does it provide much needed parking, but it will also allow for further expansion in the future. I couldn’t have picked a better location,” said Smith.
