Pet Shop Owners Celebrate 40th Anniversary

THE owners of the Henley Pet Shop celebrated 40 years in the business.

Tim and Alex Richardson, who run the Bell Street business, marked the occasion on Saturday by serving customers Prosecco and snacks.

The couple, who live above the store, decorated it with golden helium balloons in the shape of a number 40 and produced a laminated information sheet about the store’s history.

The couple’s animal cockatoo, Naigo, was also present in the store since it opened.

Ms Richardson, who also works as a part-time receptionist at Townlands Memorial Hospital and as an exam proctor at Gillotts School, said: “We are very proud, it is quite an achievement.

“There are so many original stores along Bell Street that are gone, so we’re proud to still be here. Even if we don’t continue, we would like the store to continue as an independent because that is what helps make Henley a great place to visit.

Mr Richardson’s father, Bill, opened the store in 1981 in the former premises of hairstylist Thora Hart, after starting the business in Farnborough in 1968.

He said: “We have always lived in Henley, but we went to Farnborough and by the end of the 70s fuel was getting expensive, so we decided to try to have a store closer to home.

“I was going to move to Farnborough and run this store and my dad would run this one. That was until the first store closed in 1985.

Mr. Richardson jnr took over the Henley store in 1991 when his father passed away and has been running it ever since.

Ms Richardson said: “On reaching this momentous milestone, Henley Pet Shop joins an elite group of independent stores that have been in business for 40 years or more, which includes Bell Bookstore, Franco Belge, Facys, Bagatelle toys, Jools Galore and Gabriel. Machine.

“The store has been through good and rough times, several recessions and the latest covid issues, but it is still here and ready to embrace the future.

“It’s all thanks to the great people at Henley, the loyal and valued customers who realize the importance of supporting a truly independent business and how unique stores make a city more attractive than finding the same old multinationals in every business. downtown. . ”
