A Somerset post office has finally reopened in a permanent location after months of certainty – inside a pet store.
The Wells Post Office has been operating from a temporary home at Wells Bus Station since January when a search for a new permanent location was undertaken.
Wells’ former permanent post office was closed in 2020 after being forced to shut down due to what potential developers at the Market Place site called “lack of use.”

The new outlet opened on Monday, September 6 inside Natural Pets of Wells on Queens Street.
The new Wells branch hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday to Saturday.
This is an additional 10 hours of service per week compared to before, including Saturday afternoon and later closing.
The two post office counters that will form the service are located next to the pet store’s retail counters. A tagged queue system has been put in place to efficiently serve postal and retail customers.
Antoinette Chitty, Post Office Network Provisioning Manager, said: âWe are delighted to have restored a permanent post office in Wells. We thank the community for their patience as the Covid pandemic and the ripple effect on High Street retailers affected our plans for a post office elsewhere in the city.
Roadside parking is available outside the branch and further along Queen Street, Broad Street and Priory Road. Several paid car parks are also available nearby.
Wells’ new post office will continue to offer car tax, travel insurance, and euros or dollars on demand as travel money. The national lottery service is also available.
Other on-demand travel currencies, passport checking and mailing and remittance are all available at the Glastonbury Post Office nearby.
