Four months after first reporting that Addy’s pet store was on his way to the 11th / Henderson, he’s about to open. We stopped as the owner David Leischner worked to put everything in place this weekend.
When we spoke to him in August, he had hoped to open the store in October, but as often happens with new businesses, things took longer than expected, including relations with the city (if only he there was a checklist for new businesses, he laments). But now everything is pretty much ready to go, and the store will open on Tuesday (December 14th), not too late to do some holiday shopping (it’s an Advent calendar for dogs that he keeps on our photo above). And Addy’s offers a wide variety of foods, also chilled / frozen.
Especially for dogs and cats, although Leischner added chicken food at a friend’s request. Lots of inedible merchandise, from dog jackets to cat tricks:
Setting up the store involved a lot more than storage – heating, lighting, flooring – and then there are the routines to get used to – like answering the phone with the company name rather than “hello”. !
Addy’s (named for the family’s puppy) is a few blocks from Westcrest Park, home to West Seattle’s only off-leash park, so he received many visitors – “nonstop dogs” in particular – and was encouraged to see “the neighborhood cheering me on.” Addy’s Pet Shop will be open Tuesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., starting this week. (Online shopping will also be available soon – the store website is not live yet.)
